Why social media is now a cornerstone in winning and maintaining political power, and why you should care about it.
When I say social media, you probably think of some genetically blessed twenty-something making your yearly salary through posting about this new products she is obsessed with... or if you are a millennial, perhaps some cat video (i don't know what you guys watch, but this is my best guess, sorry).
But social media is evolving... It is quickly becoming a key tool for the establishment and maintenance of power in society.
Don't believe me?
Zoharan Kwame Mamdani has just been elected the Mayor of NYC. Whether you agree with his politics or not, this man is a marketing genius. Take one look at his instagram page and you will quickly understand what I am talking about.

Mamdani has carefully created a personal brand of a wit, intelligence, relatability and care through his social media presence, which has won him political power.
His page is surprisingly informal. He uses sarcastic humor that you might expect from your favorite influencer, not a politician. His posts are highly entertaining, and counter the sterile and legal feel to most other politician's media presence. This is what voters are seeking - we no longer want distant, powerful monarchs controlling our lives, but personable, real people that we can understand and relate to.
His reels boast beautiful videography which capture trending styles of bold text and cinematic, saturated shots. He knows what his audience is consuming and has mimicked it so that his information is readily consumed.
Mamdani has leveraged social media to curate a powerful personal brand, unlocking the support of millions. As such, he represents a new age of politician - one that I predict will become our status quo very quickly.
The takeaway? - you want power and influence... Start posting babe.
